With our step-by-step guide on how to install a shower drain for tile, you can effectively install a watertight shower drain in no time. Keep reading till the end.

Steps On How To Install Shower Drain
Follow these simple instructions to install a shower drain for your tile.

  1.             Shower Drain Location
The shower floor is sloped to effectively drain water by directing it towards the drain. Therefore, a drainage system is present at the lower end of the slope.
Clean your work area to keep dirt and debris in the drain while installing the shower drain to prevent blockage. Then you can install a three-piece shower drain unit.
  1.             Install The Bottom Flange
Install the bottom flange and fix it with a drainpipe by using solvent glue. Then, create a ¼ inch slope per foot by troweling the mortar bed on the drain opening.

Install a waterproof liner over the lower flange of the drain and seal it with silicone caulking (a waterproof filler and sealant). This liner is responsible for preventing leakage. You can then cut the extra liner on the opening of the drain to keep it open.

  1.             Install The Middle Flange

Now that you have installed your bottom flange, you can insert the drain’s middle flange. Fit over the drain opening and the liner and secured by using bolts. At this point, you can check your liner for possible leaks by pouring some water into it.

  1.             Install The Strainer Assembly

Now comes the last part: installing strainer assembly that is the only visible piece after installing the shower pan. It comes with threads that you need to screw with female threads of the middle flange.
Note: For your convenience, here is the figure with the two flanges and strainer assembly combined.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing tile to guide you to the extension of the strainer assembly. The estimated idea is around 1 ½ inches if your tiles are lying on a solid mortar bed.

  1.             Place Your Tiles And Seal The Shower Drain
Once your drain is installed, you can tile your shower area. Install tile 1 to 5 mm above the drain to ensure proper water drainage.
After installing tiles, make sure to seal the joints between the drain and tiles with an elastic sealant.

Wrapping it up, installing shower drain is quite a straightforward process that you can easily do yourself. With our step-by-step guide on how to install a shower drain for tile, you can also keep your shower free from stagnant water and smell from the drain.
